Disclosed is a method 130 for ensuring that the files and other such data held on an external storage device have been updated when the device is disconnected or removed from the host computer. The method works by the host detecting that the storage device has been disconnected 132, the next step may be to check that the file update routine has been run 134 or if the update routine is needed 136. If the routine was run or is not required then no action is taken 138. Otherwise, the computer- then notifies the user to reconnect the device 140 so that an update routine can be run. If the device is then reconnected the update routine is executed 142. The method may also determine if a file stored on the device has a copy of the file on the host and if the file do not match the file on the external device is updated. Also, disclosed is an external storage device with a disconnect request button.
