The method involves processing two-dimensional image data on basis of a spatial transformation function that describes a spatial relative position between points, which are imaged using a fan-shaped imaging ray. The two-dimensional image data are processed on basis of an imaging transformation function that describes an imaging function of the imaging apparatus used for generating the two-dimensional image data set. The imaging function describes a spatial relationship between an actual spatial position of imaged points and imaging location in a recording. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) method for automatically registering a body on basis of two-dimensional image data that is suitable for use in a medical navigation system (2) a computer program product including a program code for executing a method of registering a two-dimensional image data set in a medical field (3) a system for automatically registering a body on basis of two-dimensional image data for use in a medical navigation system.
