In this lift installation a lift cage (2) together with lift passengers is stuck between, for example, the uppermost storey and the second-uppermost storey. The safety brake (16) is not engaged. The drive unit (6) is free of current and is braked by means of a brake of the drive unit (6). The brake can be released manually. If the lift cage (2) together with the lift passengers is in weight equalisation with the counterweight (4), th e lift cage (2) remains stationary when the brake is released. In this case an additional force (K) must act on the lift cage (2) for the evacuation of the lift passengers. Through the additional force (K) the friction forces are overcome and the lift cage (2) drawn downwardly. For producing the additional force (K) there can be used a cable pull (25) which is connected at one end with the limiter cable (19) and is anchored at the other end in t he shaft pit (20).
