Groups (2) are formed from flat articles (11 to 14) being supplied in a plurality of supply streams (1.1 to 1.4), by combining the supply streams (1.1 to 1.4) to form a group stream, in which a plurality of imbricated streams with the same scale spacings are superimposed and in which leading article edge zones of the superimposed im-bricated streams are aligned to one another in the conveying direction, and by sepa- rating article groups (2) from the head end of the group stream through clamping an d accelerating aligned leading article edge zones. The supply streams (1.1 to 1.4) are superimposed in at least one combining point, wherein in all streams to be combined and in all superimposed streams the articles (11 to 14) are arranged in parallel in a direction transverse to the conveying direction, have the same article spacings and are conveyed with the same speed, wherein projections of the streams to be c om- bined and of the superimposed streams (1.1 to 1.4) on a plane parallel to the parallel alignment of the articles (11 to 14) run parallel to one another or coincide , wherein projections of the streams to be combined (1.1 to 1.4) on a plane transverse to the parallel alignment of the articles (11 to 14) run together at an acute angle , and wherein the streams to be combined (1.1 to 1.4) are synchronised in such a manner, that during the stream superimposition leading article edge zones are substantially aligned to one another.
