<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing method which raises alarm to an operator, restores the designation of an external file to designation made prior to alteration, or stops printing when it is detected that the external file is altered when printing data including external characters are generated and printed. <P>SOLUTION: In case that an external file is designated (S111) and an external character link is set to be checked (S112) when printing is made, a process is moved to Step 113. Then, in case that the setting of the external character file is altered (S113), the alteration is determined to be an error, and a process is moved to Step 114.
