<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image generating apparatus for generating a gradation in which the color value changes from a center in a predetermined shape, while reducing the load for drawing, and to provide a printer. <P>SOLUTION: When generating a radial gradation having a predetermined shape, gradation symmetry is determined concerning whether the radial gradation is line symmetric, with respect to a direct line parallel to an X-axis as an axis of symmetry, line symmetry with respect to a line parallel to a Y-axis as an axis of symmetry, or point symmetry, on the basis of parameters specifying the gradation pattern, and an area that is a partial area on the gradation and on the whole of which the gradation can be generated is specified, by utilizing the gradation symmetry (S41 to S49). In addition, a radial gradation having a predetermined shape is drawn on the specified area.
