<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically configure matching technology layers (combinations of physical machines, virtual machines, operating systems and others) in response to ambiguous resource requests input by users. Ž<P>SOLUTION: For automatic configuration of a resource using a plurality of managed physical machines including resources, classes of elements constituting resources, information corresponding to the elements constituting resources, and knowledge for configuring elements corresponding to instances are prepared. When a resource request is input, it is decomposed into conditions including a class layer, a selection condition and an exclusion condition, and a search is made for an instance satisfying the selection condition and not satisfying the exclusion condition which is not in use. If such an instance satisfying the given conditions can be found, the instance is output as a resource matching the user request.
