<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting element having high light-emitting efficiency and a long life, and also to provide a derivative of a hetero polycyclic compound used for the light-emitting element. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The light-emitting element has an organic thin film formed by one layer or a plurality of layers between an anode and a cathode. In the light-emitting element, at least one layer of the organic thin film contains a compound indicated by a formula 1. In the formula 1, X<SB>1</SB>and X<SB>2</SB>independently represent an oxygen atom, a sulphur atom, or a selenium atom each. A<SB>1</SB>-A<SB>4</SB>represent aromatic residual groups that may have hydrogen atoms or a substituent.
