[Class 20 (iii).] A sliding-window balancing or counterbalancing device of the helical spring-barrel type is arranged so that the barrel 2 rotates upon a horizontal stationary axle-rod 3 or equivalent mounting and is formed or provided with teeth 9 intermediate and spaced from its ends for engaging a correspondingly situated rack 10. The barrel 2 may be mounted on the upper or lower edge of the window and engage a rack or racks on one or more struts situated between the guide members, or it may be mounted on the frame with the rack or racks secured to the window. The barrel may be provided with additional teeth at its ends or intermediately thereof for engagement with correspondingly placed racks. For vehicle windows the rack may extend downwards into the well or hollow panel, or it may extend upwards across the window opening to form a strut 10, Fig. 4, which is engaged by brackets 11 on the window.
