<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of easily manufacturing a retardation substrate of high quality having an optical compensation ability for solving a retardation difference problem arising during multicolor display by a liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the retardation substrate comprising a substrate and liquid crystal fixing layers formed on one surface of the substrate and corresponding to first to third display pixels includes steps of: (a) forming an alignment layer of a compound which is dissolved with light on the substrate; (b) rubbing the alignment layer to impart aligning capability; (c) irradiating the alignment layer with light in irradiation quantities different by area corresponding to the first to the third display pixels, and optically dissolving the alignment layer in the areas irradiated with the light to decrease alignment control force; and (d) coating the alignment layer with a solution containing a liquid crystalline compound exhibiting thermotropic liquid crystalline, and photopolymerizability and/or optical crosslinking ability, and forming the liquid crystal fixing layers different in degree of alignment by area according to restricting force of an alignment layer of a lower layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
