PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material in which a binder itself exhibits much more excellent thermal resistance or mechanical properties than a frication material using a phenolic resin as a binder, and a resin composition for the friction material. SOLUTION: A friction material characterized by using a resin composition for a friction material comprising an aromatic imide oligomer as a binder, the aromatic imide oligomer having an addition reaction group at a terminal thereof, and a resin composition for a friction material characterized by comprising an aromatic imide oligomer powder having an addition reaction group at a terminal thereof, at least one fiber selected from the group consisting of carbon fibers, aramid fibers, glass fibers, ceramic fibers and metal fibers, and an inorganic filler.
