<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress reduction of a lifetime of an electron-emitting device caused by rise of inert gas partial pressure of an image display apparatus in a non-display state. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The apparatus has a rear plate including the electron-emitting device, a face plate including an anode electrode, a voltage applying means applying voltage to the anode electrode, a switching means switching between a display state displaying an image and a non-display state displaying no image, and a timing means. The timing means measures a non-display time which is an amount of time that the switching means allows the non-display time to continue, after the timing means has measured a certain non-display time, the voltage applying means applies a second voltage lower than first voltage to be applied in the display state to the anode electrode, while emits electrons from the electron-emitting device.
