<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reception device and a viterbi decoding method which can enhance error correction capability even in an environment where reception characteristics are greatly deteriorated. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An ACS arithmetic unit 33 calculates a trellis diagram based upon data that a soft determination unit 31 makes a soft determination and outputs, and holds path information of the trellis diagram in a path memory unit 34. A reception state acquisition unit 38 obtains a value indicating a reception state of a reception signal, and when the value obtained by the reception state acquisition unit 38 does not reach a predetermined value, a trace-back processing unit 35 performs trace-back processing for a plurality of paths of the trellis diagram calculated by the ACS arithmetic unit 33. The trace-back processing is performed by calculating pathmetric values from the information held in the path memory unit 34 and selecting a path having a minimum pathmetric value.
