PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flameproofing apparatus for continuously flameproofing a precursor fiber bundle in a short time, and to provide a flameproofing method. SOLUTION: The flameproofing apparatus 1 is a flameproofing apparatus for folding back the precursor fiber bundle W for (n-1) times (n is an integer of not less than 1) outside of a heat treatment chamber 10 and traveling the n-stage precursor fiber bundle in the heat treatment chamber 10 and divided by the precursor fiber bundle W traveling in the heat treatment chamber 10, wherein an interval (hereinafter called as interval D<SB>i+1</SB>) between a hot air blowing port 17 and a hot air inlet port 19 in a (i+1)-stage flameproofing zone (i is an order of flameproofing and is an integer of 1-n) is made equal to or longer than an i-stage interval D<SB>i</SB>and an (n+1)-stage interval D<SB>n+1</SB>is made longer than a first-stage interval D<SB>1</SB>.
