<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for finishing image data free from unevenness as image data of the whole document by using a read result during acceleration or deceleration. Ž<P>SOLUTION: While changing a relative position between a line sensor and a document by conveying the line sensor or document, an image reader inputs a line start signal to the line sensor at a fixed period. The line sensor includes a photodetection portion which receives reflected light of light irradiating the document from an LED, in a main scanning direction, and a shift register for storing and holding information of signal charges corresponding to the amount of photodetection stored by the photodetection portion, and each time the line start signal is input, information of signal charges accumulated in the photodetection portion up to the input of the line start signal is held by the shift register as pixel data representing a read result, and the photodetection portion is reset. The image reader takes in the pixel data thus held by the shift register.
