<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retinal scanning image display device capable of preventing the occurrence of periodical linear patterns. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The retinal scanning image display device displays an image by causing light from a light source part emitting light modulated in accordance with an image signal relating to the image, to scan in a prescribed scanning direction. The retinal scanning image display device includes a diffraction element which is disposed on an optical path of the light from the light source part and diffracts this light in a prescribed diffraction direction. The diffraction element is disposed at such an angle that projection on the diffraction element in the diffraction direction is nearly 45° relative to the scanning direction of a scanning part.
