Process for purifying an a-keto ester by removing secondary and tertiary alcohols from the a-keto ester. In a first step, the a-keto ester to be purified is treated with a carboxylic anhydride and an acid, which is essentially insoluble under the filtration conditions, to esterify the secondary and tertiary alcohols. Subsequent filtration to remove the acid followed by distillation affords the desired purified a-keto ester.
