PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress power consumption in a relay station and to evade the waste of radio resources as much as possible when performing a relay operation by the relay station in wireless communication between a radio terminal and a base station. SOLUTION: The relay station for relaying the wireless communication from the radio terminal to the base station includes: a relay standby unit for turning relay communication between the base station and the radio terminal to a standby state, while being capable of receiving a connection request transmitted from the radio terminal to the base station in response to broadcast information from the base station; a connection request detection unit for detecting the connection request transmitted from the radio terminal to the base station in the relay standby state by the relay standby unit; and a connection request notifying unit for notifying the base station of the connection request from the radio terminal when the connection request is detected by the connection detection unit.
