The invention relates to a foam that comprises at least 90 wt % and up to 100 wt % of an oxide consisting of hafnium oxide. The invention also relates to a method for obtaining such a hafnium-oxide or tantalum-oxide foam, and to the use of the foam as a thermal insulator.
