<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive air-fuel ratio detector for determining whether a gas to be detected is an oxidizing atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere. <P>SOLUTION: A constant voltage circuit 5 is provided so that a constant current (0.5 mA) is supplied, which is larger than the limiting current of a pumping cell 2 when an exhaust gas is the reducing atmosphere and smaller than the limiting current of the pumping cell 2 when the exhaust gas is the oxidizing atmosphere.
