摘要 379,019. Disc brakes. RENOLD & COVENTRY CHAIN CO., Ltd. and RENSHAW, A., Renold Works, Didsbury, Manchester. June 10, 1931, No. 16905. [Class 103 (i).] The elements of a disc clutch or brake are pressed together by the action of wedging members, such as coned rollers, on an encircling chain carried by one member and subjected to endwise tension or compression. As applied to clutches, a driven shaft 10, Figs. 1 and 2, carries a sleeve 12, to which are splined discs 20, 23 within a split driving casing 16 loose on the shaft. Discs 21, 22 are carried by members 26, 28 having bevelled edges forming a groove 29, and are notched to slide on studs 36 projecting from the casing 16. A chain 32, lying in a groove 30 of the casing, is anchored at one end 46 to the casing and at the other to an actuating arm 48 on a rockshaft 50, the chain having double-conical rollers 34, which, when the chain'is tensioned, enter the grooves 29 and separate the parts 26, 28 against springs 40 to engage the clutch. Centrifugal force tends to expand the chain to release the clutch. The rockshaft 50 is turned by a sliding cone 54 acting on counterbalanced arms 52. The chain is preferably in two lengths, as shown, with duplicated operating gear to secure balance. The disc 20 is axially adjustable by a locked nut 60 acting through thrust pins 58. In a modification, the chains act in compression upon the members 26, 28, which then surround them. In a further modification, the chains 32 are in zig-zag form, Fig. 5, the inner joints carrying the conical rollers 34 and the outer joints plain rollers 68 running on a track 70, compression being applied to produce toggle action by thrust members 66 and cams 64 carried by the rockshafts 50.
