<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assuredly hold a constant space interval between a manuscript copy placed on a manuscript copy placement plate and an image reading means for improving the reading accuracy. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reading means 4 includes a photoelectric converter section 20 to read the image on a manuscript copy while opposing to the backside of the placement surface 12, a housing 21 which holds the photoelectric converter section 20 and has a longitudinal direction in a given direction, driven rotating members 30 which are arranged at both ends in the longitudinal direction of the housing 21 and the outer circumferential surface of which is supported by the shaft so as to protrude to the backside of the placement surface 12 rather than the photoelectric converter section 20, a holding means 15 which supports the housing 21 and is coupled with a movement means to move the housing to the direction orthogonal to the given direction, and a forcing means 24 which is arranged between the holding means 15 and the housing 21 to force the outer circumferential surface of the driven rotating members 30 toward the backside of the placement surface 12 so that the driven rotating members 30 may rotate with movement of the image reading means. The forcing means 24 is arranged at a position to keep a balance with a resultant force of a pressing force the housing 21 receives when the driven rotating members 30 come in contact with the backside of the placement surface 12.
