<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform appropriate color expansion when an image in a first color space is converted to an image in a second color space having a larger color area. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Image data represented in a first color space are analyzed to obtain an image color area (S3), and on the basis of a color area difference in the first and second color spaces, a color expansion area to be an object of color expansion into a color area of the second color space is determined (S4) in a color area of the first color space. Then, on the basis of ratio of the image color area against the color area in the first color space, the degree of color expansion indicating the ratio of the color expansion in the color expansion area is calculated (S5). The image data are converted to an image in the second color space after only its color expansion area is expanded on the basis of the degree of color expansion (S6).
