PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a satisfactorily simplified configuration, while including the configuration permitting free rotation of a fixing means and canceling the locking of a cover when the temperature of the fixing means is decreased. SOLUTION: During printing or immediately after the occurrence of jam, a heating roller 41 cannot be freely rotated because a planetary gear 85 remains meshed with a speed reduction gear 86, and a fixing unit cover 47 also cannot be opened/closed (A) because a lock pin 92 is disposed facing an apex 91a of a lock cam 91 and elevated. After the occurrence of the jam, when the temperature of the heating roller 41 is decreased, a motor 81 is reversed by a prescribed amount. Then, the meshing between the planetary gear 85 and the speed reduction gear 86 is released so that the heating roller 41 can be freely rotated. A lock lever 93 swings downward in conjunction with the displacement of the planetary gear 85.
