PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a color image with excellent color reproducibility, in a liquid crystal display element constituting one display element with pixels with four colors such as red, green, blue and white. SOLUTION: Gradation data brightness rates R<SB>R</SB>, R<SB>G</SB>, R<SB>B</SB>corresponding to respective gradation data D<SB>R</SB>, D<SB>G</SB>, D<SB>B</SB>are added to values obtained by multiplying a ratio of total value of the maximum brightnesses of respective red, green and blue (R, G, B) pixels, to total value of brightnesses corresponding to the respective gradation data D<SB>R</SB>, D<SB>G</SB>, D<SB>B</SB>of three colors R, G, B defining a color of one picture element, the minimum brightness rate out of brightnesses of the respective R, G, B pixels, and the maximum brightness rate of a white pixel to total value of the maximum brightnesses of the respective R, G, B pixels, respectively in the respective R, G, B gradation data D<SB>R</SB>, D<SB>G</SB>, D<SB>B</SB>assigning gradations of the respective pixels of red, green and blue colors, display brightness rates R'<SB>R</SB>, R'<SB>G</SB>, R'<SB>B</SB>of the respective colors are calculated by subtracting, from the values, a ratio of brightness R'<SB>W</SB>of white pixel to the total value of the maximum brightnesses, and the pixels of the respective R, G, B, W colors are driven based on driving gradation values D'<SB>R</SB>, D'<SB>G</SB>, D'<SB>B</SB>, D'<SB>W</SB>corresponding to the obtained display brightness rates R'<SB>R</SB>, R'<SB>G</SB>, R'<SB>B</SB>.
