<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder and a transmitter provided with the same for generating an encoded signal in order to highly reliably transmit important information, and to provide a decoder and a receiver provided with the same for decoding the encoded signal. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The encoder 6a comprises mapping sections 61, 62, and an additional mapping section 63a for modulating input information. In the additional mapping section 63a, the number of bits of input information is less than that of the other mapping sections 61, 62. Consequently, the number of encoded signals obtained by modulating the information can be made smaller than that of signals output from the other mapping sections 61, 62.
