<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a master carrier for magnetic transfer and a magnetic recording medium for suppressing magnetization inversion on an initialization side and drastically improving transfer signal quality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the master carrier for the magnetic transfer, a rugged pattern formed by arraying a plurality of projections with the surface of a base material as a reference is formed on the surface, and magnetic layers are formed on upper surfaces of the projections at least. In the master carrier for the magnetic transfer, the magnetic layer is formed by an ion gun deposition method in which a target material is irradiated with an ion beam and a layer is deposited with sputter particles sputtered from the target material.
