The steel wire (4) includes carbon as a micro-alloy constituent, such that on setting of the sprayed metal, bainite and martensite arise. The wire includes the following constituents, expressed as percentages by weight of the total: C 0.8-1.0, Si 0.25-0.3, Mn 0.25-0.45, Cr 0.45-0.55 and Cu 0.25-0.35. The following maximum percentages by weight may also be present: P 0.03, S 0.03 and Ti 0.001. The surface of the wire is coppered. To coat the surface, the wire is melted in an electrical arc (5) and deposited as a layer (2) on the substrate (1) e.g. using an atomization gas. Chromium carbide is formed in the layer. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method of coating.
