<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which achieves both of coercive force Hc and reliability in higher level even if heating is performed when a medium protective layer is formed, and to provide the perpendicular magnetic recording medium thereof. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the perpendicular magnetic recording medium 100 provided with at least a magnetic recording layer 122b that is a granular-structured ferromagnetic layer in which a nonmagnetic grain boundary portion is formed between columnarly grown crystal grains, and a medium protective layer 126 composed mostly of carbon hydride in this order on a disk substrate 110 comprises a magnetic recording layer forming step (S310) of forming the magnetic recording layer 122b such that the grain boundary portion contains multiple types of oxides, and a medium protective layer forming step (S330) of forming the medium protective layer 126 in a state in which the disk substrate 110 on which the magnetic recording layer 122b is formed is heated to 160 to 200°C.
