A nonaqueous electrolyte for a rechargeable lithium battery is provided to improve electrochemical characteristic and overcharging property of a battery by using 1-alkylphosphonic acid cyclic anhydride and ethylene carbonate derivative. A nonaqueous electrolyte for a rechargeable lithium battery comprises organic solvent, lithium salt, and additives consisting of 1-alkylphosphonic acid cyclic anhydride represented by chemical formula 1 and ethylene carbonate derivatives represented by chemical formula 2. In chemical formula 1, each of R1, R2 and R3 is independently C1-4 alkyl group. In chemical formula 2, X and Y are an electron withdrawing group selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, cyano group(CN), and nitro group(NO2), wherein at least one of X and Y is selected from the group consisting of halogen, cyano group(CN) and nitro group(NO2). |
