A method of operating a reverse osmosis membrane module capable of recovering a sufficient quantity of water since an excellent washing effect can be obtained for the deposits deposited on the surface of a reverse osmosis membrane and also for the microorganisms, organic substances, and inorganic substances firmly adsorbed to the membrane surface of the reverse osmosis membrane. A part of the permeate from the reverse osmosis membrane module (3) is made to flow from the brine side to the water supply side of the reverse osmosis membrane module (3) at regular or irregular intervals by changing the reverse osmosis membrane module (3) from the normal operation.
