PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an attachable member-recognition device which has a relatively inexpensive and simple structure, which sets information about an attachable member including, for example, an ink cartridge and a paper tray, and which recognizes the information, and an attachable member. SOLUTION: The attachable member-recognition device comprises: an information carrier section 70 which is provided in the ink cartridge 14 detachably attached to a cartridge-attachment section 13 and which is formed to have a predetermined shape; a deformable section 21 which is provided in the cartridge-attachment section 13 and which comes into contact with the information carrier section 70 to be deformed when the ink cartridge 14 is installed to the cartridge-attachment section 13; a stress light-emitting section 27 which is provided in the deformable section 21 and which emits light depending on the shape of the information carrier section 70 by means of stress received when the deformable section 21 comes into contact with the information carrier section 70; and a light-receiving sensor 15 which receives the light emitted by the stress light-emitting section 27 to generate a recognition signal corresponding to the information carrier section 70.
