<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize an influence on package quality without needing to stop a winding unit even when a tension sensor fails. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This automatic winder 100 comprises a winding unit 1 winding a thread unwound from a thread supply bobbin 12, on a package P; a gate type tenser 26 applying tension to the thread wound by the winding unit 1; the tension sensor 30 measuring the tension of the thread; a storage part 56 storing a measured value of the tension measured by the tension sensor 30; and a controller 55 controlling the thread tension applied by the gate type tenser 26. The controller 55 determines the failure of the tension sensor 30 during winding the thread by the winding unit 1, and when the tension sensor 30 fails, accesses the tension measured value before the failure stored in the storage part 56 and controls the gate tenser 26 based on the measured value to adjust the thread tension.
