<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a master carrier for magnetic transfer having a magnetic layer which is initially magnetized to increase the magnetic permeability (B/H), and the like. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnetic transfer master carrier 20 includes a substrate 200 having, on a surface thereof, protruding portions 201 arranged corresponding to a pattern of information to be recorded onto a perpendicular magnetic recording medium, and the magnetic layer 40 having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy formed on at least end surfaces 202 of the protruding portions 201. In the magnetic transfer master carrier 20, when a recording magnetic field is applied, the magnetic layer 40 absorbs magnetic flux to form a pattern of magnetic field. An initial magnetic field having a coercive force of Hc or more is applied in advance to the magnetic layer 40 in the same direction as that in which the recording magnetic field is applied.
