The device has a switching element (4) i.e. potentiometer, connected with a control element (2) designed as a compensator. The switching element is adjustable symmetrically around a middle position so that the switching element delivers an output signal (5). The switching element co-acts with an evaluation electronic circuit (6) arranged in a hand tool such that a drive motor is controlled regarding rotary speed in dependent of rotary speed information (8) determined from the signal and regarding a rotary direction in dependent of rotary direction information (7) determined from the signal.
