<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve printing quality by enabling discharge of fine ink mist in a required state when an image is to be formed by irradiating an ink free surface with converging ultrasonic waves and atomizing and discharging the ink so as to cause the ink to adhere to a recording medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the image is to be formed by irradiating the free surface of the ink 2 with converging ultrasonic waves and atomizing and discharging the ink that is in the vicinity of the converging point thereof so as to cause the ink to adhere to the recording medium, a meniscus 9 which stably oscillates on the ink free surface is excited by the converging ultrasonic waves (10). Furthermore, an ultrasonic wave beam (12) which converges at an apex of the meniscus is separately irradiated, thereby efficiently generating fine ink mist 11 without causing splash of ink droplets.
