The second lighting unit is a point source (10) with focusing optics (12). The unit is located and oriented such that its beams converge into the objective (15) of the imaging system following specular reflection at the detection region. The lighting units are switched on as a function of the types of features to be detected. To detect regions of the same color, which are only differentiated by their reflection behavior, only the second lighting unit (10) is switched-on. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the method of operation.
