The neutralization of acid or alkaline constituents in a gas is controlled by treating the gas after the neutralization process so as to obtain a liquid which contains any residual portion of acid or alkali present in the gas, adding an indicator to the liquid, and causing it to traverse the path of a beam of suitably coloured light which falls upon a photo-sensitive device adapted to control the addition of the neutralizing-agent. The liquid may be obtained by cooling, effecting condensation of moisture present in the gas. The neutralizing-agent is preferably administered by a continuous fixed supply insufficient to effect complete neutralization and a further variable supply controlled by the photo-sensitive device. The Provisional Specification describes also the application of the process to the control of unspecified reactions other than the neutralization of gases.
