A resinous material is prepared by condensing a monoaldehyde with a water-insoluble interpolymer containing an acrylamide in amount at least 5%, the monoaldehyde being used in amount from 0.2 to 3.0 equivalents for each amide group of the interpolymer, the condensation being conducted in the presence of an alkanol containing from one to six carbon atoms under etherification conditions such that the resulting resinous material has at least some amino hydrogen atoms replaced by -ROR1 groups where R and R1 are alkylene and alkyl groups corresponding to those of the monoaldehyde and alkanol respectively. Specified comonomers for the interpolymer are ethyl, methyl, butyl, isobutyl, hexyl and octyl acrylates, dibutyl maleate, maleic anhydride, vinyl ethers, vinyl ketones, vinyl pyridines, alkyl aceto acetates, glycidyl acrylates, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl toluene and monomethyl styrene. Ternary interpolymers from acrylamide, ethyl acrylate and styrene or acrylamide, butadiene and styrene are used. The condensation may be carried out in the presence of peroxygen-type catalysts many of which are specified. A chain modifying agent such as dodecyl mercaptan, tertiary dodecyl mercaptans, octyl or hexyl mercaptans may also be present as may also short-stoppers cyclopentadiene, allyl acetate, allyl carbamate, alpha-methyl styrene dimers, alpha-methyl styrene and unsaturated fatty acids or esters. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and butyraldehyde are specified mono-aldehydes. Specification 826,653 is referred to.
|
