The invention concerns a variable nozzle turbocharger using a cartridge (34) comprising vanes in a turbine intake nozzle formed by a base (38) fixed to a central casing (18) and a casing insert (64) fixed to the base (38). A separate exhaust case (24) is received on the cartridge (34) outside the casing inser t (64) so as to provide an intake and an outlet for the exhaust gases driving the turbocharger turbine wheel.
