A focal plane shutter has a shutter substrate (10) having an opening (11), a lever (30a) for driving a rear blade group supported such that the rear blade group can open and close the opening (11), a drive spring (50a) for driving the drive lever (30a), and an adjustment mechanism for adjusting urging force of the drive spring (50a). The drive spring (50a) has one end (51a) engaged with the drive lever (30a). The adjustment mechanism includes a ratchet wheel (60a) with which the other end (52a) of the drive spring (50a) is engaged and that is rotatably supported so as to adjust the urging force of the drive spring (50a), and also includes a ratchet claw (70a) for stopping rotation of the ratchet wheel (60a) by coming into contact and engaging with it. The ratchet wheel (60a) has a recess (63a) for avoiding contact between the ratchet wheel and the ratchet claw (70a).
