The device (12) has an exhaust gas recirculation valve (11) for controlling recirculation rate of combustion gas transferred from an exhaust zone (9) to an intake zone (7) of an internal combustion engine. A measuring system (14) measures sound intensity of the internal combustion engine. The gas recirculation rate is modified by the control device to satisfy a sound intensity set point, when the measured sound intensity does not satisfy the sound intensity set point. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling noise emitted by an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
