<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase retarder which is capable of achieving an excellent image quality by enhancing contrast. <P>SOLUTION: A phase retarder 10 comprises a light-transmissive base material 1 and a retardation layer 2, and the light-transmissive base material 1 comprises cellulose derivatives and has a surface orienting property which arrays bar-shaped compounds 3 having refractive index anisotropy at random on a surface of the light-transmissive base material 1. The phase retarder 10 satisfies nx≥ny>nz (I) and R<SB>0</SB>=(nx-ny)×d≤1 nm (II) wherein nx and ny are refractive indexes in x and y directions orthogonal to each other in an in-plane direction of the retardation layer 2; nz is a refractive index in a z direction in a thickness direction of the phase retardation layer 2; dnm is a thickness of the retardation layer 2; and R<SB>0</SB>is an in-plane retardation of the phase retarder. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
