<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object detector and an object detection method for accurately recognizing various objects, and a periphery monitoring apparatus and a driving support system using an associated object detection. <P>SOLUTION: An object detection wave section 10 recognizes an image captured by a camera 32, identifies an object candidate area, and creates a threshold map for setting a threshold of a radar detection based on a type, a direction, a distance and an angle of the potential object existing in the area.
