PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a production apparatus cannot be operated continuously over a long time, when a film is subjected to heat stretching treatment in an oven tenter used for producing an oriented polyester film, since a sublimated substance generated from the film to be heat-treated cannot be recovered, and to provide a method and an apparatus for producing the oriented polyester film which can reduce foreign substances adherent to the surface of the film by depositing/solidifying a large amount of the sublimated substance generated from the film by cooling. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for producing the oriented polyester film, the oven tenter 1 for carrying out stretching in at least one direction is used as shown in Fig. 1. In the method, (1) part of circulating hot air is branched from the oven tenter 1 to take out it as branched hot air, (2) the branched hot air is cooled once to deposit/solidify a sublimated component contained in the branched hot air, (3) the deposited/solidified solid is caught by catching means 3a and 3b, and the branched hot air with the solid removed is returned to the tenter, and (4) the caught solid is sublimated by re-heating the catching means 3a and 3b to be reproduced by removing the solid from the catching means.
