PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a liquid crystal display element provided with proper display performance. SOLUTION: A first transparent conductive film is formed on a first transparent substrate, and a second transparent conductive film is formed on a second transparent substrate (step a). At least either the first transparent conductive film or the second transparent conductive film is irradiated with a laser beam, to form a portion provided with gradation, in a section or the thickness direction (step b). Alignment films are formed on the first and second transparent substrates so as to cover the first and second transparent electrodes, and alignment processing is applied to the alignment films (step c).
