<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably read a barcode which is displayed on a liquid crystal display element by a barcode reader. <P>SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display element 1 displaying a barcode by an electro-optical effect of liquid crystal, a quarter-wavelength plate 18 is provided on the side on which light emitted from the barcode reader impinges, and a linearly polarized light emitted from the barcode reader is converted into a circularly or elliptically polarized light by the quarter-wave plate 18 and then is made incident on a polarizer 11a. A fast axis of the quarter-wave plate 18 forms an angle of 45°, about 45°, 135° or about 135°, with respect to a longer-side direction of the barcode, namely, the array direction of black bars of the barcode; alternatively, a quarter-wave plate may be attached to a light output window of the barcode reader so that a circularly polarized light or an elliptically polarized light is emitted from the quarter-wave plate. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
