<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device capable of displaying an image of high contrast and being suitable for miniaturization. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device includes: a pair of substrates (10, 20), respectively having alignment films (16, 22) which are arranged opposite to each other; liquid crystal (50), sandwiched between the pair of substrates and composed of liquid crystal molecules (501) pretilted by the alignment films; a pair of polarizing plates (310, 320) arranged so as to sandwich the pair of substrates therebetween; a first optical compensation element (210), arranged between the pair of polarizing plates provided with positive uniaxiality and having a first optical axis inclined to a direction different from a direction, in which the major axes of pretilted liquid crystal molecules are inclined from one plane along the pair of substrates as an optical axis; and a second optical compensation element (220), arranged between the pair of polarizing plates, having a biaxial refractive index ellipsoid and configured so that a slow axis is rotatable about an axis along a normal of the plane. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
