<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up process for detecting a face area from a target image. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus includes: an application specifying information acquisition unit for acquiring application specifying information for specifying an application of detection results of the face area; a condition setting unit for setting a set condition of a determination target image area on the target image based on the application specifying information; a determination target setting unit for setting the determination target image area according to the set condition; an evaluation value calculating unit for calculating an evaluation value for representing a certainty that the determination target image area is an image area corresponding to the image of the face; and a face area setting unit for setting a face area on the basis of the evaluation value, and a position and a size of the determination target image area.
