PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multimode optical coupler obtained by improving a conventional multimode optical coupler, which is easily manufactured and attains cost reduction and is superior in not only mechanical strength but also characteristics with less branching ratio variations due to modes. SOLUTION: A multimode optical fiber is inserted from a rear end side of a semicircular column-shaped obliquely pierced ferrule formed by providing an oblique hole in a semicircular column-shaped ferrule and is fixed by adhesion, and then an unnecessary part of the multimode optical fiber, which protrudes from a front end coupling surface of the semicircular column-shaped obliquely pierced ferrule is cut off, and both end surfaces of its front end coupling surface and a side end junction surface B are polished. Two ferrules with multimode optical fibers of which both end surfaces have been polished are prepared and are disposed in opposition to each other and have end surfaces butted against and bonded to each other so as to be coaxial with a preliminarily prepared single-core ferrule with a multimode optical fiber, whereby the multimode optical coupler for branching or joining light is obtained.
